When the Spanish friars arrived in Mexico they were devoted to investigate the origin of the Mexicans. The people of Michoacan showed them this painting that represents the supposed origin of the towns of Michoacan. This painting was produced to pass the information of their origins from generation to generation. The painting and tradition teaches that the first mexicans arrived from the other side of the seas and that they arrived in a kind of sea vessel that was sealed. Nobody knows how they were made. There was seven vessels. The first inhabitants landed in the port of Panoco. Traditon eventually referred to the place as “the place where those who came by sea landed.” It is said they came looking for the promised land and their last name was “Tamoanchan” which means “we are looking for our home.”

They had among them an oracle with an instrument of revelation to help them find their home. It was given to them from God or the devil or ancestors that passed it from hand to hand.
